چکیده
Purpose: In February 1988, 66 patients (98 eyes) affected with solar retinopathy due to sun gazing during the same religious ritual were observed at the University Eye Clinic of Chieti. Methods: At baseline a complete functional and morphological examination was performed. During a 7 years follow-up patients underwent functional control visits. After 7 years 32 out of 66 patients (57 eyes) were observed in order to test the macular function in the affected eye. The patients were divided in two sex and age matched group as regard as medical treatment performed at the beginning of the study: in the first group (Group A) oral deflazacort 30 mgldie, and in the second one (Group B) desamethasone Bmg/dl daily were administered intravenously. Results: Patients of group B showed a significantly greater improvement of central function in the first month than in deflazacort group (P<O.OOl). During the study no retinal complications were found. After seven years visual acuity, Amsler test and color vision function showed no differences between the two subgroups. In the desamethasone group contrast sensitivity was found out of the range of normality at high frequencies in one out of 24 eyes; in the deflazacort group 9 out of 33 eyes showed a reduction of contrast sensitivity at the high frequencies (P=O.O2). Conclusions: Intravenously steroid treatment perfomed within 72 hours from solar retinopathy seems to be the best therapeutical choice, allowing a quick improvement and the best long-term preservation of central visual functio?, and avoiding dangerous longterm retinal complication,

Benign Thyroid Diseases among Chernobyl Liquidators.
Seventeen years have passed since the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The only clear evidence of the result of this accident is that a dramatic increase of thyroid cancer has been observed after the accident among residents who were exposed by radiation-fallout at a young age [1]. However, the radiation risk for adults around Chernobyl remains unclear. Besides such effects among ...
متن کاملret/PTC1 and ret/PTC3 in thyroid tumors from Chernobyl liquidators: comparison with sporadic tumors from Ukrainian and French patients.
Like children exposed to Chernobyl fallout, the workers who cleaned up after the accident, also known as liquidators, have exhibited an increased incidence of thyroid cancer. A high prevalence of ret/PTC3 rearrangement has been found in pediatric post-Chernobyl thyroid tumors, but this feature has not been investigated in liquidator thyroid tumors. In this study we analyzed the prevalence of re...
متن کاملStudies of cancer risk among Chernobyl liquidators: materials and methods.
The current paper presents the methods and design of two case-control studies among Chernobyl liquidators-one of leukaemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the other of thyroid cancer risk-carried out in Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Russia. The specific objective of these studies is to estimate the radiation induced risk of these diseases among liquidators of the Chernobyl accident, and, in...
متن کاملRadiation-epidemiological analysis of incidence of non-cancer diseases among the Chernobyl liquidators.
The work is concerned with assessment of radiation risks for non-cancer disease among the Chernobyl liquidators from 1986 to 1996. As of 1 January 1999, the Russian National Medical and Dosimetric Registry contains medical and dosimetric data for 174,000 liquidators. The cohort of 68,309 liquidators for whom best verified medical data are available is discussed. The dose dependency of incidence...
متن کاملRadiation and epidemiological analysis for solid cancer incidence among nuclear workers who participated in recovery operations following the accident at the Chernobyl NPP.
This paper discusses the results of the analysis of the relationship between dose and solid cancer incidence among nuclear workers (males) who worked as liquidators after the Chernobyl accident. Information on this cohort of individuals is available at the regional center of Russian National Medical and Dosimetric Registry operating at the RF State Research Centre-Institute of Biophysics. Medic...
